Days Twenty-Seven and Twenty-Eight Marathon to Niagara Falls Ontario

Day twenty-seven begins with us waking up tired and exhausted in Marathon Ontario. You can read the hotel disasters post for more information on the terrible service experienced at the Marathon Travelodge. Not wanting to spend any more time in that town we headed out onto the road to cross further along Southern Ontario with our ultimate destination being Niagara Falls.

The summer months offer the traveler through this part of Canada much more than we were able to find at the time of year we choose to travel through it. Still though, natural beauty abounds for those who love nature and small-town Canada. We always tried to take country routes or auxiliary highways vs major freeways as this tends to bring you through the hearts of towns and villages much more often than traveling via the major freeways. You won’t make as good time but if you have the time to spare, you may find this type of travel across Ontario more rewarding.

Sportsman into fishing and hiking will never want for something to do in this part of Canada. With lakes galore and open hunting at this time of year, those wishing to hunt or fish will find ample opportunities for both. We saw many moose and deer on our trip through this part of Ontario and lakes are always a short distance away from one-another.

Day twenty-seven ended with us taking a motel room in the nice small town of Blind River Ontario. Blind River is located on Lake Huron and we transited through it via highway #17. There is great fishing in this area but we could not spare the time as we had to keep moving. Once again the shear size of Canada was at the front of our minds as we decided to keep moving towards Niagara Falls.

Back on the road we headed towards the largest population centers in Canada. We expected heavy traffic and boy did we find it! We knew it would be bad and somewhat confusing to drive through Greater Toronto on the way to Niagara Falls but even with the GPS unit we found we made some wrong turns. The highway system is good here though so finding your way again is not too difficult. There are toll roads to take if you wish to save some time and possible headaches.

We stopped for lunch at Alfanoos Mediterranean Buffet in Barrie Ontario. Offering a nice selection of Greek and Lebanese food, the delicious buffet certainly filled our hungry tummies! The prices are very reasonable and it seems to have a loyal following and we can see why! The owner will greet and seat you at your table with a friendly hello and smile. Definitely on our “to see” list.

Later that day we made our way into Niagara Falls where we spent some time driving around to get a good feel for the area and to see some sights we might otherwise miss. We stayed at the Best Western and got a good rate because of the time of year. If traveling on a budget mid-October presents a great time to save money on this highly-traveled tourist destination.
